Little gadget to screen for hearing loss
Sunday, 2 March 2008
There is a big campaign on that we should use good old amoxicillin instead of augmentin (with clavulanic acid) to treat kids with acute ear infections. I agree, but your views welcome.
Diamicron diabetic retinopathy simulators.

I love this toy. When I can’t convince my type two diabetics take their meds I get them to put these glasses on. The kids think its funny, the adults take the meds when I explain that this is what is going to happen to ones vision in time.

Voltaren Knee
Thursday, 31 January 2008
I use this model all the time as an instructional device with peoples dodgy knees.
Voltaren is a good old nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory tablet that is actually pretty useful though there has been something of an undeserved backlash against these kind of drugs of late as they can cause bleeding
Fixing it together
Thursday, 31 January 2008
Ah, if only keeping a relationship together was a simple of Viagra! Viagra (Sildenafil) is however a revolutionary product which deserves doctors attention and preferential prescription. Pfizer took all the risks with being novel with this agent, unlike the “me too” products that they compete

This is the top of my computer monitor in my consultation room. The Jelly Bean jar serves to placate the kids after vaccinations, ET placates me, and the Lucky Cat is a talisman for wealth (given by one of my Asian patients)
The calculator is credit card size and advertises Chlorovescent (for
This drug has really helped people with Heart Failure
Tuesday, 22 January 2008
Merck Sharp and Dohme always do the best promotional items and this heart model is no exception. I use it all the time when explaining to my patients about the heart. Enalapril is more “potent” then its - captorpril.
Just because a drug is more potent (less required or clinical effect) does
Puff! The Magic Dragon.

This pen is just another nasty pen, which does not write very well. The product is for treating asthma, called Seritide, which is actually two drugs (Salmeterol and fluticasone, a steroid) mixed together. It does work, but is very hard to prescribe in New Zealand owing to government restrictions
Apologies to any nice pharmacists out there.
Wednesday, 2 January 2008
Well maybe it is judging by the way it is to be used. Asthma usually affects the lungs but the human physiology can be unusual and interesting.
In fact, Ventolin is used to stop premature labor in woman.... so who knows.
Find Enlightenment through controlling hypertension.

Over the holiday, I found some time to an add an entry! You do not see Dilacor XR (Extended Release) in New Zealand any more as I think the generics have moved in. Pity that, as the company that makes it always gave us nice trinkets, like this Made in the USA flashlight.

Skinny Pens
Sunday, 9 September 2007
This is an elegant pen and pencil set from Abbott Laboratories who make Reductil (sibutramine) which is in fact a failed antidepressant (well actually it worked!) but relaunched as an appetite suppressant at an outrageous price.
Amazingly, and commendably, Abbott dropped the price from abut $200
It is a Boys Story
Wednesday, 1 August 2007
This web page is taking on a distinctly male slant - but that’s ok. This gizmo is just fabulous! It is used to train doctors what normal and abnormal prostates feel like when, well, you know, you “get checked” down below.
When you insert your finger you actually feel a rubber model of a

The original medication to treat “erectile dysfunction” was of course Viagra - but after you have discovered a blockbuster the competition is sure to snap at your heels.
Cialis, or tadalafil “Tada !!”, is a phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor that works just like viagra though it has got a longer half

This nice coffee cup looses the heat too fast. Lamisil is an antifungal medication that is quite useful to clear out stubborn toenail infections.
A very interesting side effect of Lamisil (Terbinafine) is that it causes taste disturbance. In fact when I was put on it for my toe nails (it worked
Glaxo Prepares us for a rainy day.
Thursday, 19 July 2007
It is winter time in New Zealand and although I live in the sunniest part of the country (wine country) this “brolly” as the Kiwi’s call it is very useful. I like the fake wood (actually plastic).
Glaxo’s drug Serevent is useful and I do prescribe it. It is basically a Ventolin molecule with a
Paint my Toenails
Tuesday, 17 July 2007
Loceryl is a rather unsuccessful painted on medication that is applied to toe nails to get rid of toe fungus. It simply did not work very well and I can say the same for the “Swiss” army knife which is a cheap imitation of the real swiss ones. The knife is more effective at killing nail fungus
A Highlight of Merck Sharpe and Dohme
Friday, 13 July 2007
MSD has a rather good reputation for being an ethical pharmaceutical company, so unfortunately for this web site the neatest PharmaToy are highlighters - albeit your choice of colors!
Cozaar is a pretty good pharmaceutical. My Mom takes it.
Beautiful Fruitful Mugs
Friday, 13 July 2007
I’m not sure what it is with Pharma companies and mugs. Do they really think doctors have time to even drink coffee? Well maybe they do - at breakfast. These are rather smartly made ones - from ceramic and stainless steel, and have a lid that keeps the heat in.
Kaletra is a new protease
Tamiflu Tackles the Flu
Wednesday, 11 July 2007
I guess the idea is that Roches product is better then hot chicken soup - which can be contained in this insulated mugs with a top. Or maybe they can be used together. My Mom used to call Chicken Soup “Jewish Penicillin”.
With flu hysteria rampant in 2007 the New Zealand government wasted/spent
Chloromyxin Magnifying Glass
Saturday, 30 June 2007
This magnifying glass is quite useful as it folds down to a compact size. Chloromyxin is an external antibiotic, used to treat eye infections. The active ingredient, chloramphenicol, is too toxic to be used internally.
Making a Pitch for Cardizem, or Diltiazem - A calcium Channel Blocker
Sunday, 24 June 2007
I liked this gift because it allows me to serve up a drink near the swimming pool. Its made of polycarbonate and pretty tuff and solid feeling.

Spiriva Box of Tissues
Wednesday, 13 June 2007
I really like the visits from the pharmaceutical reps. They are always healthy, smile, smell nice (the last one wore Issey Miyake) and humor me. And of course they always give me the trinkets you will see featured on this site.
